Oxygen Gas Sensor
Oxygen sensors may be used to determine the Oxygen levels in liquids or gases.
What they look like

Note: The Data Harvest oxygen probe is dual purpose. It can be used to obtain oxygen levels in a gas sample and dissolved oxygen in liquids. Under no circumstances can Vernier or Pasco oxygen gas sensor be used for measuring dissolved oxygen levels in liquids. There are specific probes for that purpose.
How the sensor works
The Oxygen Gas Sensor measures the oxygen concentration in the range of 0 to 27% using an electrochemical cell. The cell contains a lead anode and a gold cathode immersed in an electrolyte. Oxygen molecules entering the cell are electrochemically reduced at the gold cathode. This electrochemical reaction generates a current that is proportional to the oxygen concentration between the electrodes. The sensor output is a conditioned voltage proportional to the reaction current.
IMPORTANT: The O2 Gas Sensor must be stored upright when not being used. This is necessary to maintain the sensor.
Where it can be used
- Monitoring human respiration
- Detecting changes in oxygen during photosynthesis and respiration of plants
- Investigating rusting - the process consumes oxygen
- Investigating germination of seeds
- Investigating the catalase breakdown of hydrogen peroxide
